I’ve actually been excited to write this review, because aside from May De Ville Backpackers in Hanoi, and the Sea and Sand Hotel in Hoi An, both in Vietnam and both places I would recommend, ETZzz Hostel was my favourite place I’ve stayed in SE Asia.
Price: $6.90 AUD per night for a ten bed, air conditioned dorm.
Location: 8 minutes from Khao San Road.
Staff: Distant and uninterested.
Sleeping: So-so. If you’re a light sleeper, the sound from the busy main road may make it hard to get to sleep.
Facilities: Mostly clean and readily available. Warm showers possible.
Laundry: 40 baht per kilo and ready within 24 hours. May or may not be damp.
Internet: Free wifi offered, but mostly unreliable. Internet cafe down the street for 20 Baht per half hour.
Feel @ Home Backpackers was the first place I’ve stayed at by myself in Bangkok, but sadly, I can’t say I felt “at home” or anywhere close to it. And I know it’s just a name, but what I’m really trying to say is that I enjoyed my stay here the least of all the places I’ve stayed, every time I’ve been in Bangkok. At my last hostel I actually told a girl NOT to stay here.
It’s no real secret that there are a million “teaching English jobs” in Bangkok for people who are travelling and looking for work, and it shouldn’t be a huge secret that most of these “jobs” are total scams. Usually it’s pretty obvious that it’s all crap because there’s no real office, the people barely speak English themselves, etc. Which is where the company that calls itself FTC Educational Services comes in and changes the game.
I saw a flyer for FTC when I was wandering around Banglamphu in Bangkok, which is right near the tourist area of Khao San, if you’re not schooled in Thai geography (and who is?). It was just stuck to a phone box, and I saw a lot more stuck to walls, next to ATMs, outside 7/11’s – basically most of the places that tourists would be frequenting. It has an email and a number for a man who goes by the name of Arthur, Arthur Wood. So, being keen for some extra cash and adorable Thai kids, I shot Arthur an email and told him I would be willing to teach English until I left Bangkok in three weeks time. He emailed me back really quickly and had great English (first reason I thought it would be okay) and told me it would be around 300 Baht an hour and I could come in for an interview tomorrow, and get free accommodation there if I got the job.
This is the second part of my “Surviving Scambodia” series. You can see the first post here.
I’d like to inform you all of something you may not have been aware of before.
Cambodia? It is full of people who are just waiting to have their chance at getting an extra bit of cash out of you. Seriously, nobody ever told a handful of Cambodians that “money is the root of all evil” or “money can’t buy you happiness.” In Cambodia, apparently it can. So, because I know that not only are you all super keen to learn new things, you’re also super keen to come out of Cambodia with some money remaining in your bank account.

There’s SO many things I could be writing about right now. I should tell you about my cooking classes and riding elephants and white water rafting in Thailand. I could tell you about the scams at the Cambodian border and small children and monks who managed to scam me. I should tell you about the long boat to Laos and all the great people I met. I could tell you about riding (and crashing) a scooter in Vietnam, and the tailor that wanted me to marry him. I would tell you about all this. Except why should I?
If you missed part one of this post, feel free to read it here to get the full story of the overnight train from Butterworth to Bangkok.
I didn’t sleep much in the night, but when I did it was a decent nap. Listening to my music helped to drown out the noises of the carriage, but we were right near the door so it was a lot harder to fall asleep. We also had the fan on all night, so I nearly froze to death! I tried to roll over a little, and got a bit freaked out because I nearly fell out of the top bunk! I’m an average-sized 17 year old and even I was pretty much too big for that bed. More »
We recently came to Bangkok after staying for two weeks on the lovely island of Penang. What nobody told me about Penang was that it’s a long way away. An overnight train is needed to get there, and to get back from there as well. I won’t reiterate the trip from KL to Butterworth, because my mother posted about it here and she pretty much got it all down. Except for the bit where because we waited so long to book tickets, we had first-class seats and not sleepers. That meant a whole forty minutes of sleep for me the entire trip! Not cool.
Always book your tickets ahead if possible. Don’t think it’s lame, don’t tell yourself you’ll be spontaneous and whatever happens, happens. Because if you know you need a sleeper in order to be in any kind of human state the next day, getting seats will not make you happy. Not even first-class seats! Book ahead!
Also, it’s freezing on that train. If you get seats, take a blanket or something similar to wrap yourself in. Trust me.
So, after a really lame time on the first train, we still had issues convincing my mother that we should book the train tickets as soon as we got to Penang. You’d think she’d agree. But no. She’s adopted this “we have all the time in the world” attitude which leads to no plans, arguments, disarray and the urge to smack her. More »
